DETROIT — Despite a big launch and grand opening, low audience turn out seems to be a ominous harbinger of things to come in the ailing auto sector. Even in poor markets, past shows have done well, playing on the need of consumers to dream.
Normally, on opening day, the crowds are so intense it’s difficult to see the new automobile models. This year, visitors report small crowds. Even though the show drew people from many cities — and Canadian visitors — the show felt relatively empty. The Detroit show is considered one of the most important.
The Detroit Auto Dealers Association indicated approximately 7,000 guests turned out, down 40% or so from the 2008 show.
