Magna will build prestigious new Mercedes CLS AMG Gullwing

Magna International has been given the go-ahead from Daimler to develop and build the aluminum chassis and body for the prestigious and highly anticipated Mercedes CLS AMG Gullwing sports car set to be released in 2010.

Since Magna's s bid to take over Opel was approved by General Motors last month, there have been questions about how Magna's customers would view the new arrangement. Would Magna now be considered a competitor rather than a supplier? Would companies like Daimler, Volkswagen and BMW balk at sharing technology with such a competitor and therefore find other, less threatening suppliers?

Daimler's decision to go with Magna for the Gullwing appears to put the questions to rest. Magna has always maintained that it will keep its two operations separate and Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said at the Frankfurt auto show that he was not concerned and expected the "good business relationship with Magna" to continue.
