New Opel-based Buick Regal to be built at GM Oshawa

General Motors announced today that the all-new 2011 Buick Regal will be built at the Oshawa Car Assembly plant. The 2011 Regal is a midsize sport sedan, based, according to a statement issued by GM, on the "award-winning Opel Insignia, pictured here, the 2009 European Car of the Year." It brings the Insignia's "award-winning design, technology and European-inspired performance capabilities to the North American Market." The Regal gives Buick "a modern performance sedan" that will meet customers' "highest expectations," said Arturo Elias, president of General Motors of Canada.

The announcement is more good news for GM Canada. The Oshawa plant is already running on overtime to keep up with demand for the Camaro and will begin production of the new Camaro Convertible next year. The CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario has also added a third shift to keep up with demand for the new Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. GM is investing $C90 million in CAMI Automotive, a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors, which will add 40,000 units of capacity and result in full employment at the facility. As well, GM Canada is beginning production of a fuel-efficient, 6-speed front-wheel drive transmission at its St. Catharine's plant.

The Buick Regal, which observers say is essentially identical to the Opel Insignia, is the fourth new vehicle, with the Equinox SUV, Camaro and GMC Terrain, to be assembled in Ontario as  part of the production commitment made to the Canadian and Ontario governments in exchange for emergency funding the company received to avoid liquidation. A fifth vehicle will be announced at a later date, though it is rumored to be a luxury sedan called the Cadillac XTS. GM is committed to maintaining 16 percent of its North American production in Canada

GM will rely on European design and engineering as the source for new North American cars in the future, a key reason that the company canceled the sale of its Opel division to Magna International last month. Opel has played a major role in developing global vehicle platforms for GM.
