Ahmadinejad uses Copenhagen platform to defy US

The day after his country test-launched a surface-to-surface, high-speed Sajil-2 missile with a range of 2,000 kilometres, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used the Copenhagen climate change summit to attack the United States as an oil-addicted warmonger and insist that every nation have access to "clean and renewable energy sources" including nuclear. Whether the timing of the launch was coincidental or a deliberate provocation, the message is clear: Iran will not be bullied by the US in its pursuit of nuclear capability, whatever its real purposes are. Iran has always maintained that its nuclear ambitions are peaceful, a stance that seems less credible given the missile test.

The United States House of Representatives, meanwhile, has overwhelmingly approved new sanctions against Iran with the express intention of halting its nuclear programme. The bill must be passed by the Senate to become law, and will give President Obama the power to ban foreign firms that supply Iran with refined petroleum from doing business in the US. Though Iran's oil reserves are among the largest in the world, the country does not have refining capacity and must import 40 percent of its domestic fuel, mostly from Europe. Teheran has brushed off the new sanctions, saying that it has many suppliers and will not be affected.

The Iranians are feeling increased pressure from the United States and its allies as talk of increased sanctions and punitive military strikes against Iran has heated up. The missile launch can be seen as a response to the anti-Iran rhetoric. Iran's defence minister, General Ahmad Vahidi boasted that the missile is highly maneuverable and cannot be shot down because of its high speed and radar-evading ability. With a range capable of reaching US bases in the Gulf, and even in southern Europe, the missile is said to be deterrent in nature.

Military observers point out that Iran has had the capability to hit Israel and US bases for years before now. Yesterday's launch should be seen as a political statement, not a new threat.

Ahmadinejad berated the United States and other capitalist countries for a hundred years of "military adventurism" in pursuit of domination of the world's world energy supplies. It is this rush to exploit cheap and plentiful fossil fuels that has caused the climate change crisis, and all countries, he maintains, should be able to use nuclear power and other alternative sources of energy to ease greenhouse gas emissions.

A Greenpeace observer dismissed Ahmadinejad's new-found fervor in the climate change cause as "green-washing."
