Opinion: Automotive expert calls incentives 'double-edged sword'

Auto incentives have always "been a double-edged sword" for the Detroit Three, but the recession makes it difficult for them to end the deals, an industry expert says.

"They do spur sales, but at the same time there's an erosion of your image if you play that game for too long," said Bernard Swiecki, senior project manager and director of market analysis for the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor.

"Automakers have been more reliant on incentives since 9/11 and have been trying to wean themselves off of them, but it's hard because people get used to them and expect them." More >>
