Mercedes to Launch Fuel Cell Production Vehicle in 2009

Mercedes Close to Launching Fuel Cell

While many companies have gone “quiet” on the development of fuel cells against hot news in Electric cars and mainstream acceptance of hybrids, Mercedes-Benz announced that it will produce a fuel-cell vehicles, currently named the B-Class F-Cell this year in the United States and Europe.

While manufacturing numbers will be modest, with only two hundred going to production in 2009, to arrive by 2010, the move may keep the dream of fuel-cells alive as an alternative option in automotive production.

Fuel cells have been hampered by high costs and low range, although Mercedes announced the F-Cell will range out at 400 km. Fuel cell systems transform pressurized hydrogen gas and oxygen into power for an electric motor, removing reliance on plug-in batteries.

Mercedes also announced it will produce more electric cars.
