Boeing unveils new hydrogen-powered unmanned aircraft

The new Phantom Eye unmanned aircraft can fly at an altitude of 65,000 feet and remain aloft for as long as four days. Boeing plans to develop the plane further so that it will be able to fly for up to ten days continuously.

'The new craft will be tested at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Centre at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Phantom Eye is powered by two 2.3-litre, four-cylinder engines that provide 150 horsepower each. It has a 150ft wingspan, will cruise at approximately 150 knots and can carry up to a 450lb payload.

Boeing worked closely with Ford, who developed the engines, Turbosolutions Engineering, who produced the aircraft’s turbochargers, and Mahle Powertrain, who provided the propulsion controls.

Because Phantom Eye is fueled by hydrogen, the only byproduct of combustion is water, making it an environmentally friendly aircraft.

With such a minimal payload ability of 450 lbs and a very slow flight speed I cannot see how this plane can be of much use except for domestic spying and spying on countries with no air defences. The only exception to the negatives is it's  high altitude capability. But at lower altitudes taking into account it's low flight speed and slow response time make it an easy target for missiles. It's more like a glider than a plane with a wing span of 150 feet! Infact I think it's 4 day flight ability without re-fueling is due more to it's ability to glide than any break through in fuel use or sdvances engine design. Other than it is ebviromentally friendly I think it is waste of money. It could hardly out manouver any attack except maybe from hot air balloon.
