Bombardier Movia trains recognized for energy-saving benefits

Bombardier Transportation is taking credit for helping Delhi Metro become the first railway project in the world to receive carbon credits. The Bombardier Movia trains used by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation use an advanced propulsion and regenerative braking system that can save up to 30 per cent in energy, a saving that has helped the railway earn several hundred thousand dollars in UN-backed Certified Emission Reductions, or carbon credits. Each credit is the equivalent of one tonne of CO2, and the credits can be sold and traded.

Delhi Metro has accumulated 20 million rupees through the sale of carbon credits in the two years that the scheme has been in place. It is the first railway project in the world based on regenerative braking to be registered by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Regenerative braking systems are designed to recover and reuse the kinetic energy generated by the braking. In conventional braking systems, the kinetic energy is converted to heat and dissipated. Regenerative braking captures the energy and feeds it back into the system or stores it for later use.

Bombardier Transportation is supplying 538 MOVIA metro cars to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, with more than 410 already in service.

More than 3,900 MOVIA metro cars have been ordered globally to date.
