New car sales up in all provinces for June: StatsCan

Interior, Chrysler 200 Convertible: Chrysler had biggest increase in sales for North American carmaker, January-June, 2011

Sales of passenger cars and trucks in Canada were up 10.8 per cent in June to 141,882 units, according to Statistics Canada. The increase was most marked in sales of North American built passenger cars, which rose 20.7 per cent over the previous month. Sales of trucks (which include minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses) grew 9.3 per cent, to 81,390 units in June. This was the largest increase since February 2010.

New motor vehicle sales were up in all provinces in June, the largest increase in Ontario, where sales rose 13.2 per cent. Other large gains were reported in Quebec (+8.7 per cent), Alberta (+10.9 per cent) and British Columbia and the territories (+11.5 per cent).

After four consecutive monthly declines, Newfoundland and Labrador registered an increase in sales of 5.8 per cent.

Not given in the Statistics Canada report are numbers for individual brands. However, the Globe and Mail reports that the top three auto makers, by sales, from January to June, 2011, were Ford (140,311), GM (124,851) and Chrysler (120,903).

While the biggest sales gains by an auto maker to date this year were made by Porsche, whose sales from January to June, 2011 were up 43.6 per cent, the number of cars sold by the luxury brand is small (1,396).

According to the Globe's figures, Chrysler was the North American carmaker showing the biggest increase in sales for the period (15.9 per cent). The sales of the Detroit three together are slightly greater than—about 45,000—those of the other top ten makers combined, including Kia, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan and Honda.

It's good that the car industry is making a comeback in different countries, including Canada. I hope this trend will continue not only in the said country, but also in other countries where car sales have just started recuperating.
